Walkie-Talkie Test: What We Found on a Hiking Trip

A walkie-talkie may work well in a simple test, but outdoor conditions can change the experience quickly. We took this product on a real hiking trip to find out what actually matters — beyond the spec sheet.

What We Tested

Four testers, two groups, one full outdoor hiking route. We tested communication as distance increased, as the route passed through dense forest and rock-obstructed terrain, and as strong wind and heavy rain came into play. This was not a controlled lab test — it was real use, in real conditions.

How We Tested

We ran four scenario tests across the hiking route:

  1. Long-distance communication on a mountain trail — Two groups set off on foot, climbing along the trail and calling in at ~50m, 150m, 500m, and 1km checkpoints, then extending beyond 2km
  2. Communication in forest and rock-obstructed terrain — Both groups positioned in dense forest and behind rock formations, maintaining continuous voice communication to test signal penetration
  3. Strong wind at the summit — Force 6 conditions — Tested voice clarity and wind noise transmission under sustained strong wind
  4. Heavy rain exposure — Device fully exposed to rain across all surfaces including microphone, charging port, and PTT button; voice communication tested immediately after

What We Found

1. 📍 Long-Distance — The Claim Holds

Communication remained stable at every distance checkpoint — 50m, 150m, 500m, 1km, and beyond 2km — with 4G coverage available. The “distance-unlimited” claim was supported in our test conditions.

2. 🌲 Forest & Obstructed Terrain — Signal Holds Through

In dense forest and behind rock formations, voice communication continued without notable degradation. Signal penetration in obstructed environments was a clear strength of this device.

3. 🌬️ Strong Wind — Connected, But Not Clean

Both sides could communicate in Force 6 wind and voices remained understandable. However, wind noise was clearly transmitted to the receiving end.

Strong wind did not stop communication — but no noticeable wind noise suppression was observed. The call experience was affected.

4. 🌧️ Heavy Rain — Core Function Intact

After full rain exposure across all surfaces, normal two-way voice communication continued with no obvious functional issues. Rain resistance performed as expected.

Takeaways

✅ Pros

  • Distinctive exterior design; good portability — at 45g, the device is light enough to forget you’re wearing it
  • Magnetic clip and belt clip keep the device on the body with no load on the user — comfortable and non-restrictive during active hiking
  • Fast charging (~1.5 hrs); exceptional battery endurance — after a full day of hiking use, the device remained on standby for an additional 32 hours before shutting down from low battery
  • Stable long-distance communication in mountainous environments (2km+ tested)
  • Stable communication in dense forest and rock-obstructed terrain
  • Stable communication under heavy rain conditions

❗ Cons

  • Charging accessories not included
  • Belt clip connection is relatively fragile; magnetic clip may detach during active movement
  • Lanyard-only wearing over extended periods places load on the neck and may restrict movement — magnetic or belt clip attachment is recommended for active use
  • No noticeable wind noise suppression in strong wind — call experience affected
  • Communication depends on 4G network coverage — performance outside coverage areas was not tested
